We're covering Genesis 4-12 for a sermon series through our church, and Genesis 5 was yesterday's message. The preacher's working theory is that the return to "likeness" language was a return to God's line of promise after a few chapters spent on the cursed line of Cain. Our teaching was from the text and its references in Hebrews and elsewhere in the New Testament, along with a few Reformed theologians.

Is this a theory reflected in other translators or theologians you've read?

I have to admit a deep ignorance when it comes to theology, especially Reformed theology! Nothing I've looked at has drawn NT connections. I'd be happy to see work connecting Genesis 5 and St. Paul's epistle to the Hebrews.

Incidentally, Genesis 5:1-24 is part of the Byzantine lectionary reading for this Thursday.
