Draft of Genesis 3:16-24

And Adam named his wife Chava, mother of all life

As I may have mentioned elsewhere, Adam names his wife Chava (חַוָּ֑ה) because she is the mother of all life (חָֽי). The translators of the Septuagint found a beautiful way to preserve the wordplay of Chava/chai but in Greek: καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Αδαμ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ Ζωή ὅτι αὕτη μήτηρπάντων τῶν ζώντων. The name Zoë is related to the word for living creatures in the exact same way that Chava (חַוָּ֑ה) is related to life (חָֽי). Why do we call her the Latinate Eve and not Chava or Zoe?

LORD God said to the woman now,
    “The pains of birth will be many and multiply
    and your husband will lord over you
        in your desire and aversion”
 
And to Adam,
    “You listened to your wife
        from that tree, you ate
    Now cursed is your namesake, soil
        your toil for food will be a hardship
            forever
    Sustenance amidst thorns
        from tough herbs of the plain”
And more,
    “You will sweat for your bread
    And back to your namesake
        you will return
        to the dust of the soil
            whence I took you”
 
And Adam named his wife Chava
    mother of all life
 
LORD God clothed them in skins
    and said to them
        “Now that man is as one of us
            knowing good and evil
        Let him not become immortal
            from the Tree of the Living”
 
So LORD God sent him from Eden
    to slave upon his namesake, soil
He drove man out
 
At the east of the easterly garden
    He arranged terrible angels
        and a whirling blade
    to watch over the Tree of the Living.
